Madurai - Commercial & Entertainment

^^'Dhaya Cyber Park' in return to the notice from the Madurai Corporation have said that the 1.20 cent said to be encroached is also owned by Azhagiri. The Corporation officials sent back the cheque for 2 lakhs rupees for getting approval for the building plan. And the corporation commissioner said that they are planning for further actions. :bash:

  • I happened to go through the Vishaal mall today. I noticed that they have changed the hoarding outside the building that shows the brands confirmed in it. I took a picture of it and here it is.

The Vishaal mall has a floor area of 2.40,000 sq ft. It is a more lengthier one and it has 3 atriums i hope. As of now, one mall is functional in Madurai. It is Milan'em mall in KK Nagar with 90,000 sq ft floor area. A 3 screen multiplex is coming up in that Milan'em mall.

yup, i made a blunder gilli. It is 2.40 lakhs sq ft indeed :). Thanks for correcting me.
    ---------------------------------------

The thangam theatre has been completely razed down. It was said that somebody has bought it for a residential project. But, i really doubt it. With such a big parcel of land in such a prime location, i doubt if anybody will create a one time income giving residential project rather than bringing up some commercial projects that will generate income for ages.

The chances for another entrance is very less and on the sides, there is a petrol bulk on one side and a big bungalow on the other side. There is very little or no probability of another entrance at the rear side because the locality is full of houses.

If they want to get some more entries and exits from/to other roads, they have to do more or less like this in the below picture which means they have to acquire some more land for this as marked in the colours. So, there are very little or no chances for that now but there are chances for this in the future.

They will be getting some idea only when the mall is put to use. :)

So, no doubt Vishaal mall will be entertaining us for the next 2 to 3 years. By then, the next commercial project will be ready in Pearls gateway lake city with Satyam cinemas in it or the Tirunagar Vascon mall :) So, we are going to be fully occupied hereafter.

Not a mall, it will have some 2 floors of BIG Bazaar and a food court also will be there it was said. But the building has 4 or 5 floors in addition to the ground floor. So, we don't have any information on what is going to occupy the other floors. :)

Looks like they conducted some warming ceremony for that building. I think somebody mentioned only this as a soft launch (Or could this be considered a soft launch??!!!). Not sure of what happened inside but luckily i took a photograph from the outside and this is it.

  • Crossposting from Salem thread :

TAMIL Nadu IT exports grew by about 14 per cent to close to Rs 42,000 crore in 2010-11. The numbers show a sharp recovery from the previous year’s lackluster performance of only 0.2 per cent increase over 2008-09.
The pecking order remains the same with Karnataka leading the pack followed by Maharastra and Tamil Nadu. While the former reported about Rs 85,000-crore exports for

2010-11, Maharashtra’s exports are projected to cross Rs 50,000 crore. The official report is likely to be released in a week’s time post the final approval from the Department of Information and Technology in Delhi, said a senior official in Chennai, who requested anonymity.
Karnataka’s exports continue to be almost double that of Tamil Nadu. The state’s IT companies operated from close to 1,200 STPI units as against Tamil Nadu’s 1,751 units as of last fiscal. The number of active

STPI units in Tamil Nadu decreased to 1,003 during 2009-10. Close to 40 per cent of the units are those of small and medium businesses. Thirty-eight units were newly registered during this financial year, J Parthasarathy, director of the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), told Financial Chronicle in a recent interview. The additions mostly happened in Chennai and were companies that specialised in telecommunications software and hardware, he added.
    While exports from tier

II and III cities in Tamil Nadu more than doubled to Rs 909 crore in 2009-10, encouraging growth is expected this year too, he said.
Application software contributed about 40 per cent of the total exports while the rest was earned from sectors including BPO, product development and medical transcription.

USA was expectedly the largest revenue contributor with over 40 per cent share and close on its heels was UK with over 37 per cent.

New SEZ units (special economic zones) have been commissioned in tier II and III cities including Madurai and Salem and they are expected to payoff this year, he added. The number of notified SEZs as of last year was 29, of which 19 were in Chennai, five in Coimbatore, three in Madurai and one each in Tiruchi and Salem.
About 840 hectares are under IT/ITeS SEZs with investments of about Rs 9,000 crore as of 2009-10.
About 76 units work under the 10 operational SEZs.

  • Three experts to give presentations on the topic at college

Temples and monuments in Madurai and down south and the need to protect them is the topic for the next programme in the ‘Mission Madurai' series being organised by The Hindu at the Thiagarajar College here on Thursday (December 22). The programme is being powered by Ramco Groups and in association with Madurai Travel Club.
Three renowned experts will give presentations on this topic during the meeting, after which an interactive session would follow and the floor would be open for questions. The event is open to students, teachers, readers of The Hindu and the general public. Resource persons include R. Venkatraman, one of the foremost subject experts and a retired Professor of Art History from Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU), V. Vedachalam, retired senior epigraphist, Tamil Nadu Archaeology Department, and G. Sethuraman, Head, MKU Department of History.
The Hindu is organising a series of interactions with its readers on issues of public interest every month with the objective of the programme being to connect the public with officials/experts, leading to a better understanding of efforts to improve quality of living in Madurai and southern districts.
A topic is taken up for discussion at every meeting in which the participants come up with suggestions based on their experience. The last meeting held at the American College had ‘prevention of heart attack' as the topic.
The event to take place on Thursday would commence at 3 p.m. at the college premises.

The ongoing protests in the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border over the Mullaperiyar Dam issue has hit the tourism sector hard with tour operators and hotels reporting cancellations in the range of 70 to 80 per cent during a period that is supposed to be the peak tourism season.

Unless resolved at the earliest, stake holders in and around Madurai, the gateway to south Tamil Nadu for tourists, fear a permanent damage to the tourism- friendly image will of the State. For long, one of the major unique selling propositions of south India has been its secure environment as several major tourism destinations in northern and western parts of India such as Mumbai and New Delhi constantly receive terrorism threats. The peaceful image of the south is under threat owing to the violence that had broken out at border.

    G. Vasudevan, Director of Hotel Fortune Pandiyan and past president of the Travel Club here, told The Hindu that till now, tourism had been one of the few bright spots in the economy as despite a severe recession in the western countries, inflow of foreign tourists into India had been fairly constant.

Tamil Nadu saw around 30 lakh foreign tourists in 2010 with 35,000 visiting Madurai. The Temple City also attracts around 64 lakh domestic tourists a year, generating considerable economic activity that benefited various sectors.

The impact of current drop in tourist's inflow was being felt not only by hotels but thousands dependent on the tourism sector such as autorickshaw and taxi drivers, guides and artisans who sell handicrafts. The protestors must take up their grievances legitimately without indulging in violence, said Dr. Vasudevan, who has been involved in several efforts to promote tourism in southern districts in the recent years.

Terming the current situation as being unparalleled in the past several years, K. Muralidharan, General Manager of GRT Regency Hotel, said that if the unrest continued, the economic viability of big hotels would be threatened. “The overall expenditure had increased by 25 per cent this year but business is down this year as protests have occurred during the peak season for tourists arrival.”

He pointed out that the South India itinerary of most domestic and international tourists would begin in Chennai, proceed through Madurai and Thekkadi and culminate in Kochi from where the foreign tourists would fly out.

Srinith De Silva, General Manager, Heritage Madurai, said, “A majority of the groups have cancelled their bookings for December. Bookings are also down for January which usually sees high occupancy rate owing to ‘Jallikattu,' popular among foreign tourists.”

The tourism sector stake holders said that these concerns would also be felt acutely in Kerala which, in 2010 alone, received more than six lakh foreign tourists and earned Rs. 37.97 billion in foreign exchange.

    5. COURTAALAM FALLS – 130 Kms from MDU

NEED OF THE HOUR FOR MADURAI:

    1. VANDIYUR LAKE (Madurai) :

Recreational facility with Boating, Island and Restaurants proposed long back. Still only in paper.
Already We have Walkers club, Skating ground and a mini Indoor-stadium here.
If the proposed model is implemented, Vandiyur lake will serve as a great Entertainment spot for Madurai people and Tourists.
Facilities expected : - Boating, Beautification of existing Park, Island creation with restaurants, and a Swimming Pool for Children.
Water in this lake is present almost throughout the year, and If Govt. is serious in implementing things for Vandiyur lake, Sure it will be a favourite spot for Madurai people.

    2. AZHAGAR-KOIL (Madurai) :
It’s a beautiful Green-cover area of Ghats, with dense Forests full of herbal medicines.
A Zoological Park, long-term demand of Maduraites can be made viable here, as this environment is eco-friendly for animals too.
Already Azhagar-Koil is a well known pilgrim place in Madurai with famous Kallalagar temple, 18-steps Karuppanasamy temple and Pazhamudhircholai – one among 6 abordes of Lord Muruga. It’s in much vicinity for People of Madurai, also to People from adjacent Dindigul and Pudukottai districts.

    3. THENKAAL LAKE (Madurai) :
A wide-spread Lake with water for almost, throughout the year, in Tiruparankundram, a part of Madurai city.
This Lake can be developed on the lines of Hyderabad’s HUSSAIN-SAGAR Lake by creating Mini-Amusement Parks in PPP model, Boating, Restaurants, Walking tracks around the lake, A Skating-track for Children, Mini Indoor-stadium,A Library and a Swimming Pool. It will be much better If a statue of Lord Murugan/Meenakshi amman/Kallazhagar/a big FISH to represent Madurai..(Please no options for any kind of leaders’ statues here..:(..) is created at the center of the lake, as in Hussain sagar.
If such-an entertainement hub is created at this lake, sure it will be a heaven for Madurai people and our tourists. It will also replace our feelings for a Beach environment.

    4. NAGAMALAI (Madurai) :

As the name suggests, this green-cover ghats in Madurai is more blended with the Snakes.
A Reptile Park for Snakes & other possible reptiles like Crocodiles etc. can be created at this place to make it an entertainment spot for Madurai.

    5. SCIENCE PLANETARIUM at Madurai :

It’s also a long-term demand for Maduraites to have an exclusive Science Planetarium in Madurai. Facilities here can be created on the lines of Bangalore’s Vishwesvaraya museum, One-such kind will cater to the need of whole TN as we in whole lack one such museum.

    6. ART & CRAFTS MUSEUM at Madurai :

Though it is proposed to come-up in Tirumalai nayak Palace premises, We feel better if it comes in the site of Yanaimalai/Keezhakuyilkudi Samanar caves (or) Tenparankundram Rock-cut cave temple. So that It will be an added attraction, adding promotion to these spots.

    7. PERMANENT TRADE CENTER at Madurai :

A Permanent trade center at Madurai is also a long term demand for us. Now-a-days, the only Tamukkam grounds is engaged all the 365 days, as Madurai got exposed to new fairs like Food festival, Book festival, Crafts festival, Home expo fair, trade fair, Healthcare fair, printing industry fair, automobiles fair etc. etc. etc.

As EXHIBITION/FAIR stands to be an alternate entertainment for people in Madurai, It will be better If Govt. comes up with a solid plan for Madurai Trade center, exclusively to host exhibitions.

    8. Many Children Parks – each per ward in the city-limits :
As for whole Madurai with 100 wards (or) more, there are only 2-3 Parks, that can be identified for entertainment purpose. Each ward in Madurai need a Park, with atleast 5-6 ECO Parks planned, in vicinity to tourist spots.

    9. Kudlaadampatti water Falls :
Kudlaadampatti water-Falls is situated in just 32 Kms from Madurai. It needs more attention from the Govt. as the facilities are not upto mark and the picnic-spot is currently invaded by the anti-social elements.

    10. Vaigai Dam & Park :

Boating can be arranged as an added-attraction for Vaigai dam and the Parks need to be re-structured and beautified with colourful cramptons to attract more tourists.

VIRAGANOOR Dam & Park in Madurai should also done with all basic amenities and Parks.

    11. Kodaikanal :

More TNSTC buses should be made available b/w Madurai and Kodaikanal directly. Currently, the no. of buses plying b/w Madurai and Kodai are very less.

    12. An International Cricket Stadium :

TNCC should build an International Cricket Stadium at Madurai which will be a Vibrant for tourism during the sports season.

Existing Race-Course stadium should be developed on par with global standards with more stadiums and made use of it to its full extent.

  • ^^ Gilli yaar, awesome plan :) I hope you could add Chittannavasal cave paintings to the Pudukkottai stuff and we should plan this very well and move it in the right direction. Now TNCCI People have the motto 'Tourism' for their Trade fair now and they have planned to add another part to the TNCCI just like they are having YES (Young Entrepreneur School) for Entrepreneurs, WE for Women Empowerment, SHARP for School kids, they are adding members for their new committee, more of a tourism development forum named TOUR-IST("TOUR In Southern Tamilnadu" is its expanded form) and they have planned to appoint Mr. Rafiq as its head. FYI, Mr. Rafiq is the Managing Director of the Hotel Royal Court. So, I request our members to PM me your valuable ideas.

I hope we should 'Make hay while the sun shines'. While there is provision for Tourism development in Madurai by the TNCCI forum, why shouldn't us make use of this opportunity that has come nearer to us? Why not lets give it a try?

And I hope palani hills and idumban malai on the way to palani are also famous tourist's spots in Madurai's vicinity (A one and half hr drive) and if i am not mistaken, I have also heard of a famous Murugan temple near Viralimalai where one can get sight of numerous peacocks

    Thanks MK.

Its correct. Sri Muktheeswarar Temple, Theppakulam

    Temple's Speciality:

It is noteworthy that the rays of Sun falls on the Presiding Deity Muktheeswarar during the days from 10/11 to 22/23 in the month of March and again between September 18 to 30 and these rays remain for about 20 minutes each day. The Thiruvilayadals (miracle deeds) of Lord Shiva are very beautifully sculpted in the pillars of the temple, besides the scenes of penance of Rishis. There is also an idol of Ekabadramurthy combining the forms of Brahmma, Vishnu and Shiva with only two feet.

This will draw lot of tourist to madurai.

That is my dream too :-) The first step is to remove the red/white color that is found everywhere outside and inside the temple. Ankor Wat has not seen a single drop of paint on its walls since it was built !

What would be even better is to be able to stand at the banks of Vaigai and look at the grand towers of the Meenakshi Temple with no buildings/wires/poles/roads/vehicles in between. We should be able to have a quiet walk from the river bank to the temple with lots of trees and parks welcoming us on the way. That, to me, will be the ultimate showcase of Madurai.

This will take a lot of time and money, but it is possible. The corporation can slowly start buying out the land around the Temple and convert it to parks and open spaces. When they can buy out entire villages for airport expansion, they can certainly do this too.

We should also be able to take a boat ride from the river area closest to the Temple and go down south until Teppakulam, and then take a shuttle-bus from there to Mahal.

These are probably going to remain as just my dreams, I guess :-(

I strongly feel some out of the box thinking is required in case of tourism else Madurai will be one more ordinary city only.

Create some sort of Hype and give some complete experience we have everything smart people great musicians etc but an coordinated efforts is required.

I went for a duck tour of Philly so nice just simple ideas you know how great feeling we get at the end why not we do it for such a great temple and a historic city.

When kerala is doing this in their tourism why not we.:bash:

    Gilli,

Nice effort. Few points from my side. When you talk about a circuit, it cannot extend for some 150+ kms where in you have indicated place like Courtallam, Rameswaram and all. In that case you could have included Trichy, Tanjore and even more places....

50Km radius is what is ideal when talking about places which a tourist would plan keeping Mdu as the fulcrum. You can classify the places to relegious, entertainment etc.

Looking at your temple list, i feel you can add Tiruvathavur.

  • Today, I happened to go through the V.P.R road till valluvar colony (the locality before P and T Nagar). I was able to see many high rise apartments in the making (around some 20 both mid sized and large sized ones in the main stretch from B.B kulam to Valluvar colony alone). Why is it so? We don't have big industries and I have seen most of our people (Madurai natives) buying only a seperate house. I think only most of the other state people settled in Madurai will buy flats in apartments. Do we have such a large chunk of people from other Indian states settled in Madurai? I know and have seen many people from gujarat, u.p, rajasthani people in a large number around Meenakshi amman temple as labours and many businessmen. What kind of people go for apartments? Also what do they do it to the bought flats? Rent them out? Could somebody throw light upon this?

Not only other state people, who ever worked / Lived Metro cities like Mumbai also purchasing Flats. Further NRI's who settled western nations also prefers to purchases flats due to inherent reasons.
    - truthspeker, in 4 years
  • ^^ one another factor could be the affordability. With the land prices and construction cost going sky-high, number of people who build their own house has reduced and people now go for a ready made solution offered by the builders. For the builders, building an apartment is more profitable as they would sell more houses for a given track of land than offering individual houses for the same land. More and more builders are promoting apartments and people tend to get accustomed to the change.

  • ^^ thanks, but do they have resale values as the independent houses (i mean the increase in the price of the property in the due course of time)? Or will people come forward to buy a used flat of an apartment?

In a general principle, all constructed building have a depreciation value with the time. The resale value of the flat depends on the age of the building, type of flat, size of flat, Facilities, location & demand. Some time it is the type & class of the people living in the building which determines value of the flats. In Mumbai even 25 / 30 years old flat also command very large premium.

Further, every flat owns a small part of the plot as his share & the value of the land always raises. So definitely there is a resale value.
    - truthspeker, in 4 years
  • People have to understand the UDS (Undivided Share) of Land concept clearly before buying a flat.

For eg: in one of the MSB projects, the flat area is approx 1550 sft but the corresponding Land UDS was only 190 sft. Many will find this atrocius if they do not understand the concept.

If Land is available at an affordable cost, it is better to go for Independent Houses or smaller land area flats like 4 in 1 or 8 in 1 kind. Then resale value will be better.

Even Carpet area / plinth area / saleable area concept has to be understood.

  • Actully independent house as well as flat in a building each has it's own advantages and disadvantages. In flat practically the final usable area is almost 30% less than the area for which we paid. This % varies from builder to builder within the city and also city to city. I find in Bombay, madras all we get just 70% or even less. In mdu, things are not so bad and still it is in the range of 20-22% only.

Today where the monthly expenses r going up month after month, we will find both husband and wife working. In such cases, keeping the security and other aspects in mind it would not be a bad idea if we go 4 flat since most likely it will have security guard facility etc etc

I find in Bombay, madras all we get just 70% or even less. In mdu, things are not so bad and still it is in the range of 20-22% only.

It depends upon the free space surrounding the building / inside the compound, width of the corridors, steps, parks etc., determines the load of super buildup specification. Some time it reaches more than 35%.

Today where the monthly expenses r going up month after month, we will find both husband and wife working. In such cases, keeping the security and other aspects in mind it would not be a bad idea if we go 4 flat since most likely it will have security guard facility etc etc

This is one of the main reason why the current generation buying the flats.

Gilli, as I had posted sometime back, We had day tour of Madurai more than 20 years back. It was from TTDC and the bus used to pick tourists from Pandiyan, Ashok, TTDC-I & TTDC-II hotels and go. Due to lack of patronage it was stopped. Now I think there is enough patronage and TTDC can very well organise such a trip.

  • Yeah, I went to Meenakshi amman temple on 25th Dec morning and was astonished on seeing a man (who looked like an illiterate) speaking fluent French explaining tourists. Besides this there was a huge crowd comprised of many foreigners and people from other states of India in the Temple and other state hindus and even some Madurai people didn't mind buying Rs.100 special tickets for quick and special darshan. I wonder what they do with that huge collected sum of money because I hope it goes to 'இந்து அறநிலையத்துறை'.

Meenakshi sundareswarar temple and most of the important temples in TN are managed and run by "இந்து சமய அறநிலையத்துறை". So whatever tickets you purchase in the temple counter, it will go to them as part of the temple ticket collections. Few temples in madurai are part of Meenakshi temple. Ex: Theppakulam Mariamman temple, Simmakkal Jai Veera Anjaneya temple etc.,

Have you seen any foreigners inside the Meenakshi / Sundareswarar Sannithi? Foreigners are not allowed inside that. There was a board near the way to sannithi mentioning this.

simmakkal Chokkanathar temple, one temple in thathaneri area etc are also coming under madurai meenakshi temple. Infact till 25 years back, Tiruparankumdram Murugan temple was under meenakshi temple and "THAKKAR" used to be same person. Later on our political parties separated it so that two of their man can be appointed as "THAKKAR" for madurai and TPK temple instead of one.

All the income of the temples which are coming under Hindu Religious and Endowment board goes to that ministry after the temple expenses. HR & CE ministry spends ome money for upkeeping of smaller temples and balance probably goes to state govt account to take care of their budget deficit.

Foreigners are allowed to enter the temple. Non-hindus (be it indian or foreigner) is not allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorium (GARBHA GRAHA). In meenakshi temple Meenakshi shrine and Sundareswarar shrine are barred for non-hindus

  • MADURAI: Madurai (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Madurai) is all set for a New-Year bash. The city has been a conservative town despite the population growth and has not indulged in extravagant New Year celebrations till recently. But the festive spirit is creeping in slowly and the temple town is opening up to catch up with other cities, joining celebrations across the world.
This year, several city hotels (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Hotels-%28musician%29) have organised gala events to mark New Year and are bringing in television celebrities to attract people. While Hotel Sangam has organised a gala event named "Dhool 2012" featuring a dance and music show along with a solo drums performance by a 13-year-old boy from drummer Sivamani's troupe, Tata group-owned The Gateway Hotel has organised a traditional folk dance, magic show and a musical night. Fortune Pandian Hotel is treating the city's residents with a dance programme, hip hop stunts, mimicry and a magic show.
"This is the first time in Madurai a lady DJ is going to perform," says Mariraja, Food and Beverages Manager of Heritage Madurai, that has also organised a ramp show.
"Initially, the celebrations were marked by just a gala dinner, cocktail and fireworks. Sometimes, we would even be disappointed with the food. Only in the past five years have New Year celebrations gained popularity among the people.
"Of late, hotels have started offering irresistible events to celebrate," says S Nandakumar, an advertising professional.
One of the key reasons cited by hoteliers for the growing popularity is the youth from Madurai who move over to metros for education and employment.
"Madurai cannot be termed as conservative anymore. The younger generation is going out in large numbers. And once they come back, they want to celebrate New Year like they did in the metros," says Samuel T Rajan, sales manager of The Gateway Hotel. "The family crowd too wants a break from routine and joins in the celebrations," he added.
Not to be left behind, a slew of budget hotels have also come up with extravagant events to greet New Year. Mimicry seems the preferred entertainment (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/Entertainment) mode for the hotels. Hotel Madurai Residency and Star Residency have brought in Madurai Muthu, a TV personality known for his stand-up comedy, while Hotel Western Park has also organised a mimicry show. Royal Court has organized a non-alcoholic bash.
"The response has been very good. We had expected 150 persons to sign up for the event, and so far, 120 have registered, said a spokesperson from GRT Hotel. A pan-Asian food palette besides multi-entertainment would enthrall new year revellers at the hotel," said a hotel manager.
A sizeable chunk of foreign tourists who prefer December to visit this part of the country are also a key reason for the grand celebrations, that cost upwards of Rs 3,000 per couple and Rs 2,000 for an individual.

  • When technology takes centre stage, distance does not matter. And this is exactly what happened when Temple Town's Carnatic music lovers got an opportunity to watch and hear the vocal concert of T.M.Krishna, as it happened at the Chennai Krishna Gana Sabha, through live webcast.

Organised for the first time in the city by Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam, it was arranged at the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall and offered a unique opportunity to classical music connoisseurs here.

“Earlier, people had to spend a lot on travel and entry ticket to listen to their favourite singers' programme. But now with technology, things have become simple and easy. Once we came to know that Mr. Krishna's concert will go live on the web through his website, we contacted him and got his approval. As a trial, we watched a similar concert organised by the Mylapore Fine Arts on December 23,” ,” said Dr. Rajaram, one of the secretaries of the Samajam.

“Such programmes come good when star singers are unable to accept all requests for performances given their tight schedules. We are now planning to show the annual concert happening in Cleveland, USA, with the help of the same technology,” informed S.Venkatanarayanan, another secretary.

The webcast could not have come at a better time when the Samajam is preparing for its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

“At last, we got what we had been longing for. It was great work to bring the December music season to Madurai. No doubt, there is a difference between watching a performance live and through webcast. Through his performance, a singer communicates with the audience. The way the singer reacts to the audience response is interesting to watch. It can happen only in live concerts. That aura was definitely missing at this event here. But to get a chance to watch T.M. Krishna's concert made up for that,” said V. Krishnamurthy, vice president, Ragapriya Chamber Music Club.

“It was a good arrangement as we were able to watch the concert without paying from our pocket. The organisers of the event have done a great service to the audience craving for classical music,” said R. Vijay Anand, architect.

“Initially, there was a distance between the performer and the audience, as we had the feeling of watching big screen television. But as the programme went on, the distance narrowed and we were totally engrossed into the concert. One big advantage was that every member in the auditorium had a ring side view of the performer. It is a novel attempt,” said Tiruchi S. Ganesan, Vocalist, All India Radio, Madurai.

There were some initial hiccups which were rectified promptly. “We have to appreciate the efforts of the organisers who handled the situation well. The audio and video were in perfect sync throughout the programme. The professional expertise of performers in the area of webcast should also be acknowledged. It is a proud moment for the organisers. Though it was not a live concert, the discipline of the audience impressed me. No one left in between. The decorum was maintained as it would be in a live concert,” said K. Thiagarajan, Assistant Professor (Mridangam), Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Vidyalayam.

Though the entry for the event was free, the turn out did not quite match the effort the organisers put in to make the programme a reality. They hope to get bigger audience for such programmes in the future.

“Usually Samajam concerts begin at 6 p.m. For this evening, it had to start early, at 4.30 p.m. To attract more people, the organisers can perhaps work on ‘deferred live telecasts' in the future,” suggested Mr.Thiagarajan.

The days are not far when singers need not go to a sabha for performances as they can perform in a place of their choice and audiences can watch anywhere their favourite singers' concerts through live webcast or even in the cosy ambience of their homes.

Regarding Big cinemas, they'd plans for acquiring Priya complex theater and had even signed a deal with an interior designing company for the same..Only Just now, they closed this theater and some works are going on, I hope they come-up with good screens with a multiplex environment.Bcs, as you said, even if we have 3 Big cinemas screens in Madurai, It doesn't seem so outside. If they renovate this Priya complex, that will take Big cinemas count in Madurai to 6 and sure Madurai people can be saved from day robbery of Rs.200-250/- tickets for first few days for Big star movies..!! I am looking for "Nanban" tickets in Madurai for Jan.15 (or) Jan.16 for my family but every theater is showing tickets at the range 200,250 only../-..!! Until INOX opens their multiplex in Vishaal Mall, there's no kinda entertainment place for Madurai families...:(

I don't know whether they are renovating it gilli. I just wanted to know their status. But when I went to movies those days, there were 2 screens by name Haajeera and Sha. Size of both the screens greater than that of the Jazz and Arsh kinda small ones. If they are renovating it, it will be nice with most nice theatres in Anna nagar with Ambiga cinemas completed renovation of Screen 1. Btw, how is ambiga now?

Yes, except the BIG Cinemas Ganesh, the other two are smaller ones. If they acquire some big (and now) useless (for most of the people ) theatres like Ram Victoria, Kallaanai, Murugan, Meenakshi talkies and all it will be nice. Also, how is the Solamalai theatre nowadays?

It was the first mall that came in Madurai before 2 to 2.5 years (if i am correct). At that time, since Madurai people had no other place to hang out. So, there used to be a huge crowd (especially youth) in the weekends. I hope Mani Impala multiplex will become the life saver of this mall. I don't know why the crowd was less. Maybe, when you went was not a holiday season (Huge population of students are in other cities). Another reason maybe, they are waiting for launch of vishaal de mall?

Yesterday, I received a mail in return from a person who is in a high position in the Texmaco tractors Group that the news that Texmaco was coming is not a true one.

  • Not more than 3 days back, I mailed the RR Industries people, seeking details about their Madurai project. They have planned for 6 Million square feet IT space of which they will complete 600,000 square feet in the first phase. The man who spoke to me over phone (his name was Niranjan Rao), when asked about the Flextronics IT space, he said that it was a confidential information and he was not supposed to tell this out and he also added that they have not taken this project yet (Somebody near the project site may confirm this on seeing their place) because they feel that the conditions are not so favorable to take their project now and also said that if the IT industry in Madurai progresses further, they will start their project. So, it is high time for the Government to bring the Disaster Recovery Center to us as soon as possible or allot lands to the local IT players atleast in the IT SEZs because if those kinda facilities delay in coming, then I hope it will be a total disaster to Madurai in IT front.

I also doubt that where much money is playing (Real estate), won't they urge the government to bring some IT Development? I have heard about the Omni bus operators are partly responsible for the delay in FEDL from Chennai Egmore to Kanyakumari. When they are so powerful that they influence in railways, are they not in the SG operations?

  • There has been a misconception that IT /ITES industry is the saviour for any region. Pl note that other industries give far more income to Govt (Duties & Taxes) , workers, suppliers , SMEs, vendors, Service providers than IT / ITES.

Since IT salaries are higher in comparison and these guys are seen in internet world, this issue is hyped up.

The reality is that IT companies do not want to come and start. Pl accept that and start thinking from that angle. This is not with ref to facilities & infra alone. Orders from abroad are dwindling and there is not much domestic requirement. The concessions are given only for Export oriented IT/ ITES units.

If Govt implements e governance in a big way, demestic IT market will get a boost. Due to competition, IT / ITES companies have to reduce their expenses and they will look at Tier 2 & Tier 3 cities.

Madurai region will benefit and sustain better only if other industries are encouraged.
Tuti MDU corridor is going to be the saviour of the region.
    - kannan infratech, in 10 years
  • Kannan sir, we are always ready to welcome whatever comes to us, not only IT. I already understood that IT is not the only saviour which is already suffering from shortage of projects and the other industries are really very very stable ones but, I wanted the government to kick start the Disaster Recovery Centre which I hope is also a part of e-governance. Apart from all these, the above mentioned one is also a part of the Corridor.

  • There are many entertainment kinds of facilities in Madurai which is not known by most of us till today because they are not properly showcased or exposed and go unnoticed. Today, me and Madurai gilli went on a roaming around the Madurai suburbs and found many worthy things that have not got much recognition because of poor showcasing. See the below two posts. They are example for the above statements.

We noticed a GO KARTING track near Karupaayoorani which is owned by the Cinepriya theatre complex owners and they charge Rs. 75 for 5 minutes Go Karting drive for which they see a good patronage during weekends without much advertisement. For everyone's information, this is the second Go Karting site near us after the one that came a long time back (Actually, I saw that more than 6 or 7 years back) in Hotel Tara (Hawa valley) on the way to Oomachikulam to Alagarkovil. This one is somewhat less expensive than the first one. We have a similar racing track near Vadipatti where I was really surprised to see these kinda facilities coming there, a place 22 kms away from Madurai city (One could find it in the Dindigul to Madurai highway on the left). So, this is the third one for us. Some pics of those.

Now, look at the below facility which is an indoor stadium for 'Badminton' by name Temple City Vaighai sports centre run by a private club called Temple city badminton club. This is also an unnoticed one in the Karupaayoorani area. Look at how modern it is.

This is one of the peculiar feature in retail trend of Madurai. Apart from those below, we were not able to capture Gurudev motors that deal with Skoda sales and service in Vilangudi and Sukrith Hyundai that deals with sales and service of Hyundai motors near uthangudi and Thirumala cars that deals with sales of imported cars in Ringroad and also Jayaraj JCB and John Deere dealer near Fatima college and the big number of two wheeler bajaj, tvs, honda, hero motocorp, royal enfield and yamaha showrooms in the city because it will be childish :D. • Some updates on retail which we noticed during our short trip around Madurai :

    * Fourth bakery of the Puppy's chain opened in Tirunagar (after the ones at PP Chavadi, Anna nagar and BB Kulam).

    * Big bazaar is in the same stage with some minor advancements (I hope it will take another 3 months to see a BIG BAZAAR there).

    * And some retail hypermarket kind of facility is going to occupy the first (and may be also the second floors) in the Big Bata showroom found near the Jayaram Bakery near the PP Chavadi. I saw some name which I don't remember now.

    * As valmiky said the second Univercell outlet of Byepass road is open near Maapillai Vinayagar theatre.

    * And I noticed the site earmarked for Vascon mall (the Sitalakshmi mills site). It is so big. Hope for them to come sooner. :)

  • A model of the Taj Mahal is making waves in Madurai, but at the same time a 250-year-old heritage building faces demolition

    http://www.thehindu.com/multimedia/dynamic/00896/19MP_MAMP_TAJMAHAL_896300f.jpg

For the past few weeks, the CSI grounds in Pudur has been witnessing an unprecedented rush. During the Christmas, New Year and Pongal weekends, vehicles and people jostled for space to get to the grounds. The reason is visible from a distance: it is the great monument of love, the Taj Mahal, that is evoking great curiosity and interest in the Temple Town.

As dusk sets in, the illuminated plywood and flex board replica of the architectural wonder stands like a mirage off the traffic-congested Alagar Koil road.

Squeals and shrieks of visitors, who get in after paying Rs. 25 entrance fee, makes the model seem real. The ‘wow' factor is evident as hundreds queue up to be photographed against the majestic backdrop, paying another fifty bucks.

Majority of the visitors said they had not seen the real Taj Mahal, Shah Jahan's white marble mausoleum in Agra built in memory of his third wife Mumtaz Mahal, and that the replica was just as good. This exactly serves the purpose of the organisers, who assert that it is purely a “commercial venture.” “But then,” adds Kovai Murugesan, the Coimbatore man behind the enterprise, “it is also providing so many people with some basic information and idea about this wonder of the world.”

“They don't have the means or can't afford to go all the way to Agra, so we did it for them here,” says the happy businessman, as people come to his office room at the exhibition site to thank him.

“This is like the real Taj Mahal. I have been there,” says a visitor. “Fantastic job,” gushes another. “Keep it for some more time,” pleads a third.

A bus full of villagers off-load and are simply awestruck. Same is with a group of school and college college students. You can see the cash registers ringing at the ticket counter and wonder whether the organizers should be appreciated or criticized.

Afterall, it is not the real Taj. But then people are returning with all the “wah, wahs”, obviously overlooking the at times shaky minarets, peeled off canvass, and fading artwork.

“The model has been painstakingly set up for the benefit of the people,” reiterates Manager Pandian. The group, which organizes the Coimbatore and Erode Trade Fairs every year, is not new to this business. This is the fourth year in a row that they have brought in the novelty of erecting world famous monuments and buildings in small towns like Salem, Erode, Trichy, Ramanathapuram and now Madurai besides Coimbatore and even Chennai.

“It is the public response that drives us. We have brought the White House, Parliament House, Dubai Towers and now the Taj to Madurai,” adds Pandian. The entertainment quotient gets doubled as food stalls and amusement park for children is also set up at the site. Going by their statistics, it took 100-odd people to make the moulds and assemble the Taj Mahal here.

The 80-feet tall and wide structure has been erected over a platform of 1,000 wooden poles and was completed in three weeks time. It feebly tries to match the real Taj Mahal in lay out with the water front and green carpeting. Done at a cost of Rs. 21 lakh, daily between 4 pm and 10 pm, there are at least 1,500 walk-ins, which peaks to 5,000 to 7,500 during weekends. And of these, at least 40 per cent line up for the famous photo-click.

Even as Madurai celebrates the Taj Mahal, just a few kilometres away, on East Masi Street, a local monument more than 250 years old, which withstood the vagaries of weather and changes in rule and has been housing a police station for 100 years, faces demolition.

One is referring to the Vilakkuthoon police station, which is guesstimated to be in existence from the brief Maratha rule during 1740 to 1743 (or even earlier) going by the plaque on its right compound wall that reads “kotwal chavadi”. Recently the custodians of culture and heritage, who have been also trying to resurrect the city's tourism, had Vilakkuthoon included in their heritage map.

“We discussed with the Collector and even decided to have a stopover at the Vilakkuthoon during all our heritage walks, so that people come to know about this remnant of glory,” says Dr.G. Vasudevan, founder member of Travel Club.

Aghast by the proposal of building a new police station at the site by demolishing the old heritage structure, INTACH, Madurai Chapter, is exploring a Public Interest Litigation.

“Definitely we will have to stop this. We don't want to antagonize the police either and we hope the police will also understand and cooperate with us,” says Convener Arvind Shankar.

While the CII, Madurai zone, is also likely to chart out its action plan soon, says the Chairman elect of CII Tamil Nadu, Mr.R.Dinesh, who belongs to the Temple Town: “We will surely work in the interest of Madurai,”

It is learnt that the Collector U. Sahayagam has already dashed off a letter to the City Police Commissioner stating the Vilakkuthoon police station is a heritage building and can not be torn down.

On the other hand, the police chief feels the current building does not provide adequate facility and space and therefore needs to make way for a new one unless an alternate site is identified.

The point is, can we really allow our history and heritage to take such a plunge?

There are, no doubt, inherent challenges unique to the preservation and redevelopment of heritage properties. We should not forget historic buildings are assets that add to the texture and culture of a street and a city and are worth investing in.

A public outrage may spare Vilakkuthoon the wrecking ball. Every citizen now has an opportunity to have a say and speak aloud for the protection of this iconic link from the past.

    Facts about the Taj Mahal:

Was constructed over a period of 17 years (1627 to 1643) using materials from all over India and Asia, which were transported by over 1,000 elephants. Built at an estimated cost of Rs.32 million then, the translucent white marble was brought from Makrana, Rajasthan, the Jasper from Punjab, jade and crystal from China. turquoise from Tibet, sapphire from Sri Lanka, carnelian from Arabia and and Lapis lazuli from Afghanistan. Twenty eight types of precious and semi-precious stones were inlaid into the white marble mauspleum that attracts four million visitors annually including 200,000 foreigners. More than 20,000 labourers from across north India and a creative team consisting of sculptors from Bukhara, calligraphers from Syria and Persia, inlayers from southern India, stonecutters from Baluchistan created this finest example of Mughal architecture combining elements from Persian, Turkish and Indian architectural styles. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. -- Source Internet

    Facts about Vilakkuthoon Police Station:

Though no city historian is able to provide the exact year of construction, it is guesstimated that it came up sometime in 1740 or even earlier because a plaque still preserved reads the “Kotwal Chavadi” (inscribed in English as Cutwals Choultry, the Main Guard). Since ‘Kotwal’ is a Marathi word, it is presumed the place would have been in existence during the brief Maratha rule between 1740-1743 A.D when Morari Rao of Gooty was the Governor-In Charge for Madurai and Dindigul after the decline of Nayak rule. The Nayaks had established ‘Ushavadis’, where revenue and police officials settelod civil disputes and these later came to be known as ‘chavadi’. Nayak architecture is still visible inside the police station, it houses a stable like space perhaps used for camels and horses those days. The cash locker, lockups and arms and ammunition stack room inside are also intact. The locker is unique as it is inlaid in the wall. It was renovated during British rule. The present police station came into being in 1912. -- Source, Mr.C.Santhalingam (retd.Archaelogical Officer), in The Hindu Metroplus, Sept.2006

People are pushed to organise their fairs & exhibitions in Tamukkam grounds, CSI-Pudur grounds, Madittsia building, Raja muthiah halls,PTR hall and many marriage halls because of the non-availability of Madurai Trade Center.Hope all the Madurai trade bodies like Maditssia,TNCC,TNFGMA,CII and everyone join hands to set-up a MADURAI TRADE CENTER soon in Madurai..:)

  • Chella Software along with Honeywell were to occupy the Ilandaikulam IT park.

But none of them has occupied the park and with the change of rule hopes are dwindling.
With Dhaya Cyber park case on court, RR IT park on hold and no works intiated on the other IT SEZ at Vadapalanji (with Elcot's Signature tower)Madurai is in a grim scenario.

Only connectivity can improve Madurai's fortunes. Wonder if Madurai's IT export reach a four digit figure( in crores).

I hope Kannan sir could guide us and tell something in this regard as to what could be done.

  • A realty boom is underway in this temple town with a string of residential projects and gated communities coming up in the outskirts

Since the beginning of this millennium, Madurai residents have become comfortable with the residential apartment concept.

Next to Chennai and Coimbatore, this ‘temple city' seems to be the most preferred destination for many reputed builders who are lining up to construct swanky homes. In the last 10 to 12 years, there has been a gradual but steady growth in this sector, irrespective of the on and off recession. Now, at this crucial juncture, the presence of one big ticket industry, say, for instance, an automobile giant like the Ford or Tata or Honda or an IT major, would accelerate the growth of the housing sector. Already, many in the industry feel that cities like Chennai are crowded and rates are pretty high.

From the builders' point of view, there is not much space in Chennai and some suburban locations. Even assuming that there is land available, the cost of land is exorbitant. Keeping this in mind, a majority of construction companies/builders in and around Madurai have started moving out of “Old Madurai” and are in the process of promoting a “New Madurai.”

With big support from the government, private builders feel that the temple city has all the potential to be a preferred destination to buy flats.

With tourist spots like Kodaikanal, Thekkadi, Munnar and heritage town Karaikudi close by and Rameswaram and Kanyakumari within reach, Madurai is an ideal location for property development.

    K. Meenakshi Sundaram of Siva Shelters, Arun Vijaay Malli, Director of Sathyasree Developers Private Limited and among others visited The Hindu office on an invitation to share their views and suggestions for the Property Plus.

According to them, flats are hereto stay. People in different segments have understood the features offered/available in apartments than living in independent homes.

    Gated community

The idea of gated community is also picking up gradually too. New look homes are coming up along Sivaganga Road, near Vilangudi, near Paravai, along the Ring Road, along the New Natham Road and so on.

The road leading to Alagarkoil too is being explored by some builders for promotion of residential apartments and gated community living.

With Old Madurai almost packed for different reasons, residents are prepared to move away by, say, five to six kilometres or even beyond existing city limits.

“We are able to offer spacious living, assure fresh air and pollution-free atmosphere…these are some of the highlights of moving out from congested locations.

The prices of the flats have a tag ranging from Rs 30 lakh to Rs 60 lakh. The rate per square foot begins from Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,500. In the coming years, it may only go upwards,” they say.

In DRO Colony, Meenakshi Sundaram, who has recently promoted a residential apartment, has sold all the units. His next project is coming up closer to Maatuthavani bus stand and hopes to repeat the performance.

Similarly, Arun and his partners, who have built 92 luxury apartments in a sprawling two plus acre near Iyer Bungalow, a first of its kind in Madurai, have provided swimming pool, huge space for indoor games and community hall, besides good space for car parking on the basement - all in one campus ready for occupation shortly. According to Mr. Arun, the campus will be a major landmark on the stretch.

    CREDAI

The CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers Associations of India) is an apex body of organised real estate developers.

In Madurai, about 15 to 20 builders are its members, who adhere to the CREDAI norms strictly. This is again an advantage to the customers since there is transparency in transactions. To justify that Madurai is the cynosure of property developers, many top builders from Chennai are lining up here offering their flats to potential buyers. The banks also, on their part, organise “home loan melas” at periodic intervals in different locations, thus helping the builders identify new customers.

As a banker pointed out, “With in-principle sanction letters offered on the spot, the builders too feel pretty comfortable in getting their funds in stages.

The documents are thoroughly vetted by the panel members of financial institutions and hence there is no room for any apprehension about fake documents or impersonated properties.”

    Shopping mall

Apart from new and high rise residential apartments, the Ghokale Road in the city would soon be the most favoured spot for many. A big shopping Mall – “Vishaal” -- is coming up over a two lakh square feet area, which would have five cinema houses in it, has provision to park over 100 cars and a range of shopping outlets. It would become operational by February, according to one of the tenants.

With so much development, Madurai is poised to hit a new high in the housing sector.

Dear MK, more than twenty years back, Vandiyur tank and facilities there were much better. We had boating facilities, children joy train, love birds, parrots etc in cages, rabbits and a small restaurant. Over a period of time instead of increasing the facilities, SG and corporation authorities reduced one by one. Boats were sent to yercaud, joy train to kodaikanal and so on. At this speed Soon, the whole lake area would be divided into small pieces and sold to people.

  • Chennai: The Indian unit of audio technology company Dolby Laboratories Inc. plans to increase its market share by 20% in the next two-three years by tapping clients in the southern part of the country.

“Historically we have not been strong in the south and that has a lot to do with the legacy. We were operating with a partner before in India and now we have a subsidiary in place,” said Pankaj Kedia, country head of Mumbai-based Dolby Technology India Pvt. Ltd. “We hope that the upgrade from analog to digital will (fuel growth).”
Dolby, installed in 70% of movie screens in India, has a negligible presence in the south. With the move to digital gathering momentum and new multiplexes being built in urban areas, Dolby sees a market of more than 2,000 screens in the four southern states compared with the current 30-40 screens.

Nearly 80% of the single-screen theatres and all multiplexes in the south are digital, according to a report on media and entertainment by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry and Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India Pvt. Ltd. Cinema chains are also increasing their presence in tier-II cities, with PVR Ltd expected to launch around 300 screens in Madurai, Coimbatore and Tirupur, all in Tamil Nadu, by 2012-13, the report said.

The three-year-old Indian subsidiary expects demand to rise for Dolby’s 7.1 surround sound technology, which enhances the 3D effect. The company has already sold the year-old technology to 170 screens in India. Four Hindi movies (Ra.One, Rockstar, Bodyguard, Dum Maaro Dum) were recorded with 7.1 surround sound and the company sees at least 15 using the technology this year, some of these being Tamil titles.

With the central government making digitization of cable mandatory for key metros by 2012, the company also hopes to market its technology to direct-to-home service providers.

Nearly 1.2 million set-top boxes operate with Dolby’s surround sound technology, and digitization could push this number up to 8-10 million in two-three years, Kedia said.

  • The Residency group of hotels is all set to strengthen its presence in the South by expanding its chain. Besides the two hotels that The Residency, promoted by the Appaswamy group now operates in Chennai and one each at Coimbatore, Bangalore and Karur, plans are afoot to establish hotels in Puducherry, Madurai, Mysore and Chennai.

The proposed project at Chennai is expected to come up along the IT highway. Though this would not be immediate, the launch of this project would make it the group's third hotel in Chennai. The group already operates two hotels at T Nagar - The Residency, Chennai and its second property – a four-star category hotel – The Residency Towers.

The Managing Director of the Group, Mr Ravi Appaswamy, told Business Line that the work on the Puducherry project was on, while land had been procured for establishing a hotel each in Madurai, Mysore and Chennai. While work on the group's venture at Madurai and Mysore would commence before the close of the year, the Chennai project, which is expected to come up in a 4.5 acre ground on the IT highway would not be immediate, he said.

At Madurai, the hotel is expected to come up closer to the airport on a seven-acre ground. “We have given the work to a Singapore architect. The plan is on the drawing board stage. We intend to have a convention centre as well and take the city to the next level. The Mysore project would have 100 rooms and in downtown area. We will target tour groups and business people as there is a lot happening in terms of IT in Mysore.”
    Allocation

The budget allocation towards the Mysore and Madurai projects have been estimated at around Rs 125-150 crore. “It will be from our internal accruals,” he said, adding “it will take about three years to operationalise these hotels. We expect to commence the work before the end of this year.”

Mr Appasamy was in the city to oversee the renovation of the Coimbatore project. Asked if he was looking to foray in to Hyderabad and Bangalore, he said, “We are not looking at establishing our chain in Hyderabad for now because of the Telangana issue; as for Bangalore, we are looking at a right location.”

(The Bangalore property – The Richmond Hotel – is managed by SAS Hotels).

Reverting to the Coimbatore project, he said, “We are preparing to offer our customers a new experience, be it dining or staying. Today, the hospitality industry here has matured, grown four-fold; we are not looking at establishing a second project here.”

Asked if he sought to refurbish the interiors because of the competition following entry of a number of business class hotels here, he said, “The normal turnaround time for renovation in the hotel industry ranges between 8 and 10 years; we have taken up renovation of gadgets such as the air-conditioning plant, lift and other engineering equipments in the first phase. This would result in energy saving and thereby cost, as also ensure our commitment to the environment.”

The group has installed a windmill, which caters to the energy requirement of its five hotels, he said.

Renovation of the rooms was in progress and every three months, the refurbished rooms would be rolled out, he said. “We invest on maintaining the room, not just creating the facility and stopping there. Every three months, we refurbish the upholstery, polish and make the required changes. Now, we have taken up 100 per cent replacement on an estimated outlay of Rs 25-30 crore.”
    Differential tariff

The group has introduced differential tariff such as corporate tariff, best available rate and flexible pricing. “This dynamic pricing is basically to handle the supply-demand gap and we also offer 24-hour check-out facility unlike most others that go by the 12 o'clock check-in rate,” he said, adding “like the airline industry, the hospitality sector is also going through a revenue management situation.”

Pricing of various offerings such as availing cab service, pick-up and drop, complimentary breakfast etc, which remained fixed in the past was made more flexible now, he added. “The customer can choose the services that he/she wishes to avail from the bouquet of offerings and pay only for the services availed.”

To a query on the challenge that the hospitality sector faced at this juncture, Mr Appaswamy said, “Attrition at the threshold level is still an issue.”

  • ^^ MK, You don't know abt URC Constructions...!!

They make their projects very quickly and one ex: is how they finish Velammal Medical College Hospital campus- such a huge site in just 3 months.

URC is the company who built Chennai ASCENDAS and so many IT Parks in Chennai..Happy to see them getting few projects in Madurai too..:)

It's possible with URC to see Poppy's hotel in this Summer.

Whether this is URC construction which head office is at Erode?? If so, in this office my sister(civil engr) worked before 3 years. :) She worked for the paper plant site(Subburaj paper mills) which is in Manujothi ashram near Nellai.

I just read the ETL Infra's plans from the old news articles and tried to visit their website. But their website (http://www.etlinfra.com/) could not be accessed (Guess they are suffering from some problems, not the website, the company itself). So, they would have wound up the plans for now, so the Recidency group's would be the earliest thing foreseeable for us as far as the convention center facility is concerned

Itchy partheniums stand along the banks. Viraal fish create ripples in the water and white-feathered birds wait for them amidst the litter of plastic cups. Some bathers take a dip while a few wash their vehicles. Others defecate on the bunds or come here to dump waste. Unperturbed by it all, a man enjoys his ride in a swan-shaped boat around Naganankulam Tank with two children.

The 25-acre tank, which holds 20 to 30 feet of water throughout the year, impressed the Madurai District Collector, who was passing through the New Natham Road in August 2010. He immediately launched a boating service there in the interest of the tank and residents of the city.

Two decades ago, if Madurai residents wanted to enjoy a boating ride they went as far as Kodaikanal or Ooty. Once in a while, the authorities provided boats at Mariamman or Vandiyur Teppakulams. Most of the time, people missed out because they did not know the boats were there or because they did not want to be caught in the crowd. After some time, the services were dropped for reasons known only to the authorities concerned.

The city corporation does provide a miniature boat facility at the Eco Park. Though the boating rink depth is 15-feet, the water level now is just two-and-a-half feet deep, but visitors seem to enjoy pedaling their boats. “Perhaps the dearth of proper parks and entertainment avenues has forced residents to swarm into theatres just to while away time,” feels Jesuraja, a government employee living in Aathikulam.

Eighty-year-old Pitchai recalls that when the city expanded and villages became urban spaces with concrete structures, the Naganankulam Tank almost faded into oblivion. In fact, the bunds became a cozy place for anti-social elements and drug addicts.

Now, there are five boats: two two-seater pedal boats, two four-seater pedal boats and one rowboat. The Naganankulam Tank is trying to satiate the residents' love for boating and though it doesn't have the chill climate of a hill station, the tank certainly can soothe frayed nerves.

The tank looks mostly deserted during the day and becomes active during the evenings. With a few boats and a new jetty, retirees who come out for a walk find it a good place to meet friends. If properly maintained, the tank that once irrigated fields and gave life to villagers can revive flagging urban residents. Instead of dumping a kid in front of the television or computer, parents can use the boating facility to spend time with their children and enjoy a leisurely ride.

“The tourism department and the district administration should take up the issue of maintaining the lake,” says Kavitha, who takes her five-year-old daughter on a ride. She feels uncomfortable whenever the boat moves around the corner where men defecate in the open.

The tourism department brought used boats from Kodai Lake to start the facility in the tank. Though the boating operations are open to residents from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., people prefer evenings because there is no shelter from the sun. Canopied boats and shaded waiting areas might attract more boaters during the day.

“Though there are about 20 to 30 enquiries, only two or three people opt for boating,” says P. Kumar, assistant acting manager in charge of the boating operations at the tank.

On an average, there are barely half a dozen boaters during weekdays and a few more during the weekends.

The residents in the area are happy as the tank has raised their groundwater level, which was otherwise receding with the increasing number of apartments and houses.

The boating facility is an added attraction, and they wish the authorities would improve it. This tank has escaped urbanization, encroachment and the real estate business, while most other tanks in the city have either shrunk into playgrounds or become government offices.

The District Administration has plans to make the tank a green zone — clean, free from open defecation, and plastic-free. District Collector U. Sahayam says that the administration has sent a proposal to the government to put up fencing around the lake and lay a park and walking area around it.

But announcements and plans still remain on paper, and the residents of Madurai are waiting to see when these visions will materialize.

    Eco Park

*13,000 square feet and around 15 feet deep

*Seven boats (two- and four-seater pedal boats and one under repair)

*Rs.20 (adults) and Rs.15 (children) for a few rounds

*10 to 20 riders on weekdays and 100 on weekends

    Naganankulam Tank

*25 acres, 30 feet deep in centre and 20 feet deep elsewhere

*Five boats (four pedal boats and one rowboat)

    *Rs.50 (two-seater), Rs.100 (four-seater), Rs.150 (rowboat)

*2 to 3 riders on weekdays and 10 on weekends

The District Collector plans to link the boating facility at Naganankulam with his pet project Uzhavan Unavagam on the New Natham Road. He plans to introduce traditional bullock carts and horse carts to transport people from the tank to the Uzhavan Unavagam, where they can enjoy traditional and healthy food items.

    * Busy interior works are going on inside the Vishaal de mall. (I hope that they have come to a decision to complete the interiors and after putting the mall to use they could complete the exteriors) but those in brackets are only my guess!

    * The construction in the South Masi street has gone for pillar erection for their 2nd floor.

    * GRT Jewellers construction is going on very fast and i hope the retail sales will start there in not more than 6 months

    * The construction near the Gowri pazhamuthircholai near the West Masi and North Masi junction is progressing very fast (I don't know what that could be)

    * Apart from all these, the snail paced construction in the East Masi street has picked up good speed and it will be ready in less than 2 months time!

  • Bangalore, Feb 22:

IBM, which is planning to expand its SMB (small and medium business) footprint in order to target companies in smaller cities, has identified five cities, namely Nashik, Surat, Bhubaneshwar, Madurai and Ludhiana for its expansion plans in this calendar year.

“Capabilities that were once available only for large enterprises, such as consulting, cloud and analytics, are now available to small and mid market companies and using these, they can compete on a global scale,” said Mr Andrew P. Monshaw, General Manager, Global Mid-Market, IBM.

IBM defines a mid-market company as having less than 1,000 employees.

He said that many mid-market companies don't realise this because they operate with partners who talk to them traditionally about hardware and upgrades and not about tapping the potential that solutions offer. “IBM's plans for a smarter planet include mid-market companies,” he said.

The company, which has a presence in around 19 cities across India as of December 2011, plans to touch 47 cities by December 2013. “All 47 offices will be 'full' offices and will have at least five people,” said Mr Jyothi Satyanathan, Vice-President, IBM mid-market, India and South Asia.

Discussing the problems faced by smaller companies, he said, “There are around 36,000 mid-market companies in India. If you want to look at small companies having less than 100 employees, there are 5.5 million of them.”

He said that since talented IT people usually chose to work for companies such as Infosys, Wipro and IBM itself, such small companies did not typically have much access to quality manpower.

Successive governments have been cheating us, regardless of which party they are. The current government blamed the previous government and the politicians. What have they done to fix it? NOTHING.

Ooh, I dn know these much details but there are plastic boards with their name surrounding the site. So, I suppose they bought it as a whole, the mill, and everything.

  • ^^ I thought from this (http://royalroots.biz/plan.asp) webpage that they are MLM kind of a company like Amway, Vestige, etc but it is a hypermarket. A hypermarket in the first floor (not in the ground floor) doesn't make sense. But that is okay.

Ok. The site adjacent to the mill (towards Kanniyakumari) was also owned by them. They were planning to sell it for people to build housed. I am not sure if it is still with them.

Some told that the construction has progressed very well and some other told that they could come up with an update with pictures, we could only have some clear idea if they post pictures. We shall wait for that. The vascon had plans for a mix project i.e residential and commercial. And it was told that the commercial part i.e the vascon mall will have PVR multiplex with it. Let us see what happens.

And guys, exterior works on one side i.e the side facing MKU distance education wings building was about to complete.
