New Award BIOS Tool For Performing SLIC Insertion/Modification

by Yen
Interesting, Yen. I didn't realize Dell was using Award bios in some of their models. Thanks for the info!

Yes, it's worth to check for that. Dell Vostro 200 / 400 / 410 and Inspiron 530 /530s have got Award.

    Try this:

    v1.07

ADD: Ability to recognise and process Dell Award BIOSes

FIX: SSV3 SLP only mod still shrank EPA module

  • A new tool to perform insert a SLIC table using one of a number methods.

    To find best method:
    1) Search this thread - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=2967 - and use a method that has previously been proven to work on an older BIOS revision for the same board.
    2) Otherwise:

    - Pubkey is best for ASUS
    - SSV3 is best for Gigabyte
    - Try ISA or 0+2 for everything else

There is an attempt to automatically identify the manufacturer from the BIOS. Please ensure the correct BIOS manufacturer is selected from the drop down list before modding. If your manufacturer is not listed then it is safe to select Other.

    Notes:
    - BIOS flashing is not for the faint hearted. There is ALWAYS an element of risk. Please ensure you are familiar with the procedure, and have necessary floppy disks etc., to allow a recovery in case of a flash failure.
    - We assume you have a legitimate edition of Vista. Piracy is NOT condoned.
    - Please remove any softmods. For Vistaloader this includes repairing the boot sector and MBR of the hard disk.

    Flash recovery information:
    - Read here - http://www.biosman.com/biosrecovery.html - note that sometimes the filename needs to be different - the boot block error message may tell you, however this does mean you need a second machine to be able to change the file name.
    - Also read here - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=2105
    - Ensure that the version on the disk is the (unmodified) version you are trying to flash with SLIC - avoids problems with bootblock flashing.

SLIC and SLP files - The program needs:
    - A 374 byte SLIC file (ASUS included, others available from other tools and softmod archives). Checksum is automatically corrected.
    - A one line text file containing the SLP string you wish to be inserted. Again, ASUS is included. See http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=71016&st=200&p=534097&#entry534097 - only the text string (without ') after the hex numbers is needed in the TXT file
    - 911medic has kindly uploaded his collection of SLIC .BIN files here - http://slics.myftp.org/slic.rar.

    Vista Keys and Certificates
    - Keys can be found here - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=2581
    - Certificates can be found here - http://rapidshare.com/files/118119842/39-CERTS.zip

    XP Keys and OEMBIOS files
    - Keys can be foud here - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=2602

    Method
    1) Flash, using the manufacturers recommended method, the unmodified BIOS of the same version. This allows the bootblock etc. to be updated.
    2) Mod the BIOS using the tool
    3) Flash the SLIC'd BIOS from DOS. This ensures the bootblock is left intact and maximises the chance of a successful recovery if a problem was to occur.
    4) You then still need to use the appropriate key and certificate for Vista, and key and OEMBIOS files for XP.

Many thanks to Zort and P4Spooky for their invaluable advice and feedback.

There is also the ability (based on the methodology here - http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=4792) to see if a certificate matches a SLIC file or the existing SLIC table in an already modded BIOS. Just click the verify button adjacent to the certificate text box after selecting a pre-SLIC'd BIOS or SLIC file. This does not need to be done to mod a BIOS, it is completely independant.

    Enjoy
    Andy

Is there a reason for reducing the SLIC files to 1 asus SLIC....In all other versions you had Asus, Dell, HP and MSI......and you reduced the SLIC21 from 5 files to 4? Were the previous SLIC files in both folders a problem in past versions of the Award Tool?

They are available to you to add at will. Why worry about what is included in the tool?

The SLIC.BIN will work, There are 8 v2.1 slic files and 40+ 2.0 slic files. You can use any of them in the tool.

I dont understand the reason for asking the question..:p

When the author of a program leaves something out from a previous version, there is some reason to it...at least logically it says that....so, why was it left out, when in previous versions it was there most of the time?

Happenstance. It means nothing and has nothing to do with the function of the tool. You are expected to have your own SLIC files, I believe he leaves them there for convenience and so you know what goes where.

    Dont worry about it...

The tool used to have Asus,Dell,MSI and HP SLICs - all 2.0. It now has Dell,MSI and HP 2.1 SLICS in the SLIC21 directory. They are fully backward compatible so there is no reason to include the old 2.0 SLICs. There is no 2.1 ASUS yet, but when there is I will just include the 2.1 ones. As 911medic said, I just include a few to make it simple. There are tons more. There was nothing wrong with them, just the old 2.0 SLICs won't activate windows 7.

Just wanted to give you a heads up. I used your Award tool version 1.09 to upgrade my HP slic from 2.0 to 2.1 on my Vista x64 motherboard, it's a Gigabyte GA-MA780G-UD3H board by the way.

I just wanted to let you know it worked like a charm, my Vista is still activated and I am ready for Windows 7!!! :D

I clicked on "advanced options" and selected the EPA logo to be at the end and it worked perfectly, both logos display normally!!! ;)

Thank you for your hard work and keep it going, we need you.

  • This tool works great, even fixed my bad modded bios. I hex edited the original bios to unhide the -Power ON by Keyboard - [Any Key] option I was missing badly and ended up with "Recovering... Searching Hard Drives for BIOS Image..." and restarting in infinite loop. Disconnected all HDDs and the board recovered from the backup BIOS chip successfully. Using this great tool I inserted SLIC2.0 in the same bad bios image, the checksum was fixed and now all is good.:D

  • Hi !
Just tried to modify the following Bios revision F4 with Award-Tool 1.10 :
    [URL="http://www.gigabyte.de/Support/Motherboard/BIOS_Model.aspx?ProductID=2674"]

I checked the ssv3 method as it is known to work best with Gigabyte Mainboards.
Slic and slp was HP 2.1, the cert I used is HP too, and a click on the cert-verify reported OK.

After using the GO-Button Awardtool reported success. But when I use the Verify-Button I get a message that ep3cds3r.bin has an invalid checksum (FF).

I attached the log-file to this message, maybe someone can take a look at it.

The question is : Did I made a mistake or is it safe to flash this bios ?
    Thanks in advance.

Edit : Just to let you know : Verify Checksum Error is normal. Bios flashed succesfully, Vista activated with slic 2.1 HP

Verify is more rigorous. The error is ignored during normal modding as it is of no consequence, as you found.

  • I think the tool was fine, more of a corrupt download...:D

    There really was a bug:o
It was replacing the SLIC with OEMS and then not finding a SLIC table, duh!

  • It seems that if the SLIC 2.0 pubkey/maker exists in BIOS can not be replaced with 2.1

    It is by design?

How to get SLIC 2.1 in this case?

Same BIOS as in post 78 http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showpost.php?p=62716&postcount=78

  • hi guys

I've been struggling to mod my abit IC-7 G bios with Award SLIC mod tool, but it seems I can't.

Some SLIC don't work, others are not compatible with the SLP files.

At one point I managed to modify the bios, but when I tested it with a tool that verifys if 2.1 slics exists, I found on this forum (slictest.exe), it said "BIOS Slic (*bin) size mismatch! SLIC size should be 374 bytes. That's when using the bios file I modded with cbrom for adding the latest RAID bios for my mobo controller. Also I get in Award tool: "BIOS image dos not sum to 0"

But if i use the original Abit , untouched bios with Award tool I get: "No space
    to insert module"

I have almost all the slic and slp files I could find on this forum.

What are the best slics to use with my mobo? I chose 0+2 methos in award tool.

    Thank you.

All slics on this forum for download work..no more to discuss.

The SLP is a simple text file that allows the tool to insert the manufacturer string..no problem there.

When you used cbrom to insert the module, did you test this (flash it and use) before the slic mod. You should mod one part at a time and test after each change.

Upload images of the original bios and your modified raid bios and let me take a look.

I think there are too many tools in this explanation. You do not need the slic test tool, you do not need to verify slic/cert. You only need to know what slic you insert to use the corresponding cert.

I think somewhere in the attempts you are very confused with the various components and what they do.

    You need:

The bios file to be modded

The Slic.bin to be added. NOT and ISA.bin

The cert to be added to the OS

This is it. If you want to activate XP, maybe add an SLP string. If you dont use XP, do not mess with this.

I would be happy to look at the various files for you if you provide links to downloads..:D:D

  • No XP here.
I need to learn the know-how in case win 7 certs do show up and that's why I'm trying to add 2.1 slic to my BIOS .

Anyway. I started from here: http://forums.mydigitallife.info/showthread.php?t=5385

    The files I used:

    http://forums.mydigitallife.info/attachment.php?attachmentid=1024&d=1246175981

    ftp://slics:9444246@slics.myftp.org/slic.rar

    ftp://slics:9444246@slics.myftp.org/Tools/Award_SLICTool/awardtool112.zip

This is the original latest Abit IC7-G bios.

Awardtool says there is no more space to add the slic module when using this bios.

And the modified bios, the one to which I added the last Raid Bios (4284.bin) using cbrom.

These are the only downloads you need..other than a bios file..

Now to help you with the knowledge to use them. Messing with bios files can brick the boards, I think people see the tools and think the danger is gone...I think it makes it worse..
I will say that Andy has taken pains to minimize the damage that can be caused.

I will see what I can do to help you..

EDIT: The tool works perfect with the Modified bios..I am not sure what you have been doing (or not been doing) to make it not work..
You can only have ONE SLIC in bios..

    The SLP IS for XP..

    OK:

Put bios in folder with tool.

    1-- Open tool

2-- navigate and find original bios with the tool.

3-- choose ABIT in the manufacturer menu

4-- Choose slic to insert from slic folder you have. 2.1 slic of yuor choice.

5-- Be sure 0+2 is checked, check log for TS, and hit go..you will have a nice fresh modded bios..

Is this similar to what you were doing??

The verify and slictest tools are garbage for this..not necessary for any reason IMHO..
